Test & Measurement World: Complex modulation comes to optical fibre
The demand for greater data throughput seems endless, and it is accelerating faster than many people expected, creating bottlenecks in fibre-optics networks. Digital transmissions of 100 Gbps, which are just now being introduced, are expected to alleviate some of these bottlenecks.

LTE in FOCUS
As LTE networks roll out this year, engineers will be applying various test scenarios in lab and smallscale field tests to the LTE devices and equipment they are developing. As part of the worldwide 3GPP Release 8 standard, LTE has been fully defined since March 2009. This new technology is an essential enhancement of classic mobile-communications technologies, such as GSM/ EDGE, WCDMA/HSPA(+), and CDMA2000/Ev-Do Rev A.

3. Design Ideas

Measure propagation delays using time-domain reflectometry
You normally use TDR (time-domain reflectometry) to measure impedance change along a signal path. It is also a valuable tool for measuring propagation delays. The TDR technique is applicable to any high-speed circuit. You can use the propagation delay of a highspeed pin-electronics IC in ATE (automatic test equipment) to perform these measurements.

Control stepper motors in both directions
Stepper motors need bidirectional control in automatic machines or robotic applications. The circuit in Figure 1 lets you control bipolar stepper motors and run them in both rotations. You can use the circuit in automatic devices and as an evaluation circuit for testing stepper motors.

4. Events

ISMA 2010, 20-22 September, 2010 at Leuven, Belgium

The ISMA conference provides a forum for engineers, researchers and other professionals active in the field of modelling, analysing, testing and improving the noise and vibration characteristics of mechanical systems and civil structures. The conference combines expertise in the noise and vibration fields by stressing common measurement, modelling, analysis and control technologies.

SEMICON Europa 2010, 19-21 October 2010 at Dresden, Germany
The main topics covered in the SEMICON Europa conference include performance with a european touch (digital and AMS/RF), fab yield improvement through test data (digital and AMS/RF), and new test challenges such as MEMS / high reliability devices, new environments / new challenges / new requirements and balancing costs vs high quality and performance requirements.

5. Research and Analysis

Communications Test, Industry Research, Global
Communications test and measurement forms a significant portion of the test and measurement market. However, the telecommunication downturn coupled with the economic uncertainties in the past three years has created a highly volatile and dynamic market, driving test equipment vendors to enter into strategic alliances.
