OpenVPX/VITA-65 compliant Serial RapidIO switch card
Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing has announced the
availability of the new OpenVPX/VITA-65 compliant VPX6-6902 SRIO (Serial
RapidIO) switch card. This rugged 6U VPX board, available in both air-
and conduction-cooled versions, combines Ethernet and SRIO switching in
a single slot for management, control and dataplane switching in high-performance
embedded military systems.

Low-cost PCI Express development kit
Lattice Semiconductor has announced the availability of a low-cost PCI
Express development kit for its LatticeECP3 family of high-value, low-power
FPGAs. Based on a new ECP3 PCI Express solutions board, the kit
accelerates development of PCI Express designs.
Lattice Semiconductor
3U VPX software radio boards
Pentek has introduced 14 products in its new family of 3U VPX boards for
data acquisition, software radio and digital signal processing. These
new boards offer flexible backplane fabric connections supporting
maximum data rates of up to 4Gbyte/s with PCIe (PCI Express) Gen 2 (Generation
2) and 2.5Gbyte/s with other protocols.

Development platform for iPhone and iPod accessories
Cypress Semiconductor has introduced a development platform for Apple
iPhone and iPod accessories based on its new PSoC 3 architecture.
Designers can use new CY8CKIT-023 PSoC expansion board kit for iPhone
and iPod accessories – a plug-in board to the company’s CY8CKIT-001 PSoC
platform development kit – to streamline design of advanced mobile
accessories using the flexible PSoC programmable system-on-chip
architecture.

3D-FPGA technology trims FPGA costs, with timing-exact ASIC option
3D technologies as a means of driving forward FPGA technology are
suddenly in vogue. In the case of the Tabula technology the 3-D is
virtual; from Tier Logic, yet another FPGA start-up, comes a technology
in which the 3-D structure is physical.
EDN.COMMENT: Are we there yet?
Once again, we have FPGA-market news in this edition; another start-up—Tier
Logic—and phase two of March's newcomer Tabula's revelations about its
product plans. I use the word "new" about Tabula, but in reality the
gestation of the company has been prolonged, and it has figured for some
time in lists that industry observers compile of potential new players
in the sector.

Actel blends single-chip mix of ARM core, FPGA and analogue
In its latest programmable silicon product line, SmartFusion, Actel has
combined programmable logic, programmable analogue functions, and a
"hard" (fully diffused) ARM Cortex-M3 processor core. With this
architecture, Actel aims to provide designers of small-to-medium-size
embedded systems with the means to implement a singlechip, SoC
(System-on-Chip) design at an economic price point.
Second generation of FTDI's allpurpose USB interface IC
FTDI (Future Technology Devices International) has introduced its
Vinculum VNC2 user-programmable dual-USB 2.0 Host/Slave intelligent SoC
controller. The design has evolved, says CEO Fred Dart, in response to
user feedback from many projects involving the first-generation part;
engineers wanted a greater degree of flexibility and programmability.

4. Events |
|
ICESS 2010, 29 June - 1 July, 2010, at Bradford, UK
The 7th IEEE International Conferences on Embedded Software and Systems
(ICESS-10) will be held in Bradford, United Kingdom. Topics of interest
include embedded hardware and architectures, embedded software and
agents, embedded real-time systems, models of physical systems, and
distributed embedded computing.
DSD 2010, 1
– 3 September, 2010, at Lille, France
The Euromicro Conference on Digital System Design (DSD) addresses all
aspects of (embedded and high-performance) digital and mixed
hardware/software system engineering, down to microarchitectures,
digital circuits and VLSI techniques. It focuses on advanced circuit and
system design and design automation concepts, paradigms, methods and
tools, as well as on modern implementation technologies from full custom
in nanometer technology codes to FPGA and to multicore infrastructures.

Embedded Hardware And Systems, 2010
The merchant market for embedded boards and systems continues to evolve
throughout the recession and create new opportunities for agile
suppliers of embedded technology. These opportunities are driven by a
conversion taking place for OEMs: from internally building and
integrating captive systems to buying merchant products from embedded
suppliers.
