Dear Sir/Madam
The Embedded World 2006, exhibition and conference, held in
Nüremberg from14th to 16th of February will highlight the
important news in the embedded market. To give you a foretaste
of this event we collected some product news, articles and more
information about this topic for you. Enjoy it!

CompactPCI SBC (Men Mikro Elektronik)
The F12 Eurocard-format,
single-board computer is based on the MPC5200 automotive PowerPC
devices. Combined with the Cyclone FPGA from Altera, the Compact
PCI board is more flexible than any of the traditional solutions
available, since special I/O functions are integrated for each
individual application in the form of embedded IP cores. At the
heart of this board is the 384-MHz Freescale processor, which
comes up with 760MIPS at less than 850mW power dissipation.

ATCA
Hub Board (Kontron Embedded Computers)
The
AT8901's modular design allows this high-performance switching hub
to be extremely flexible. It offers an option to implement the new
Advanced Switching Interconnect (ASI) technology in convenient ATCA
environments. The board supports both base (PICMG 3.0) and fabric
interfaces.

Embedded PC (Janz Automatisierungssysteme)
Janz
Automationssysteme has announced it would rename its complete range
of embedded PC systems as a new product family called «emPC". All
products in the range are fan-less systems and inherently 100%
maintenance-free. With smallest dimensions and the ability to mount
the systems in different orientations, these emPCs enable users to
integrate them into a wide variety of applications.

Rugged Flat-Panel Monitors (GE Fanuc
Embedded Systems)
Offering the mechanical design and environmental advancements to
exceed strict specifications, the Sentinel Series monitors are
available in 10.4, 15, 19 and 21" display sizes with anti-reflective
and anti-glare coatings for improved visualisation and faster, more
accurate operator response. All models in the family have been
designed, tested and certified to provide compliance for shock
(MIL-S-901D, Grade A), vibration (MIL-STD-167-1), EMI/EMC
(MIL-STD-461E), and environmental (MIL-STD-810E).

Serial streams shrink embedded-system designs
A new wave of
extremely compact embedded computing platforms is finding its
way into industrial, medical, consumer, and other space-critical
applications. Despite their compact size, these small,
off-the-shelf computing elements offer designers full processing
performance and complete I/O features in both proprietary and
standards-based form factors.
Warren Webb
explains in his article in EDN how these undersized but capable
computer modules let designers skip the most complex portion of
embedded-product design and concentrate on the custom circuitry
unique to their design and reduce hardware- and
software-development schedules.

What
Makes a Modern RTOS?
There are some fundamental RTOS issues that have to
be addressed in order to meet the demands of modern system designs.
In this article Joel White from Enea Embedded Technology takes a
look at these in detail.

Programmable analog circuits yield single-chip sinusoidal
oscillators
Field-programmable analog circuits are enjoying extensive use in
signal-conditioning and filtering applications. This Design Idea
from Stefano Salvatori and Paolo Lorenzi,
University of Rome, Rome, Italy, presents two simple
sinusoidal oscillators based on the ispPAC10. The PAC Designer
software gives a comfortable approach for design and
verification.

Build
a USB-based GPIB controller
This Design Idea
from
Boštjan Glazar, Marko Jankovec, and Marko Topic, Laboratory of
Semiconductor Devices, Ljubljana, Slovenia
covers the development of a GPIB controller, which turned out to be
easier and cheaper than commercially available alternatives. The
design uses easy-to-obtain components with a total component cost of
approximately $50.

Smartphone Market Growing Rapidly Despite Major Challenges
Year-to-year growth in the Smartphone market in 2005 will exceed
70%, and will continue to grow robustly for the next several
years, reports In-Stat. There is a risk, however, that these
devices will be seen by consumers as just very expensive feature
phones, the high-tech market research firm says. A major problem
is that many users do not download applications that make the
devices more useful after they leave the store.

DSP Software Development Techniques for Embedded and Real-Time
Systems, by Robert Oshana
This introduction to DSP software development for embedded and
real-time developers shows how to use digital signal processors
efficiently in embedded and real-time systems. It covers
software and firmware design principles, from processor
architectures and basic theory to the selection of appropriate
languages and basic algorithms. The reader will find practical
guidelines, diagrammed techniques, tool descriptions, and code
templates for developing and optimizing DSP software and
firmware. The book also covers integrating and testing DSP
systems as well as managing the DSP development effort. The
accompanying CDROM contains the code from the design examples as
well as design tools and product demos.

Intelligent
and secure machine-to-machine networks
This month Lantronix and its distribution partner
Alpha Micro Components make a joint offer for EPN's readers,
giving away three sets of two development kits for machine-to-machine
networking applications. Each prize, worth over 415 Euros, includes
a combined XPort and WiPort development kit from Lantronix.
XPort is a compact integrated solution that converts almost
any device with a serial interface to an Ethernet capable unit.
