Dear Sir/Madam
Even during cold and rainy periods like nowadays when most people stay at home, portable handheld devices for mobile communication are driving the embedded market. If you have to design such devices you´ll find some helpful information in this newsletter. Enjoy!

Embedded-Design Tool Suite (IAR) IAR launched its YellowSuite integrated tool suite, a family of advanced embedded design tools and middleware that offers a tight integration of visualSTATE into the IAR Embedded Workbench IDE, along with the recently introduced IAR PowerPac RTOS and file system. Wireless Development Kit (Ezurio) The Universal Wireless Development Kit provides embedded developers with a unique design environment that supports Bluetooth, 802.11 and GSM/GPRS. The kit is available with Ezurio's pre-qualified Bluetooth and 802.11 Wireless LAN modules. Click here
ARM7-based Motor Control (STMicroelectronics) Built around the 32-bit STR750 microcontroller, the STR750-MCKIT enables the rapid development of high-performance vector-control applications, using both PMSMs (permanent-magnet synchronous motors) and 3-phase AC induction motors, for cost-sensitive appliance, industrial and HVAC markets. Triple-Core Processor (Texas Instruments) With three cores running at 1GHz each, one TMS320TCI6487 processor can support up to 10 EDGE-enabled carriers. In addition to supporting more users, the multi-core DSP provides enhanced capabilities for GSM, including interference cancellation and better reception for high data-rate applications. Click here
A Physical Approach to WiFi PHY Design Using SpectrasysThis article by William Clausen from Prowave discusses the architecture and implementation of a signal monitor in the WiFi 2.4GHz band using a new RF system design and simulation approach. Click here
Beware the Low-Cost FPGA So, thanks to the increasing availability of standard components using key protocols such as PCI Express, Serial Rapid IO and Gigabit Ethernet, the predicted integration of high-speed serial interfaces in mainstream applications is finally happening. In order to address this space, a new breed of low cost FPGAs with embedded transceivers are needed to provide the bridging and interfacing solutions between processor and DSP or to connect existing customer solutions to the new technology. Bob Blake from Altera describes this new FPGAS in detail in his article in EPN. Click here
Implement a stepper-motor driver in a CPLD Due to Freescales heavily used but obsolete SAA1042 stepper-motor-driver IC, this Design Idea by Stephan Roche describes a CPLD-based implementation of a stepper-motor driver that can replace the driver in SAA1027- or UCN5804B-based designs. Click here
Use a CFL ballast to drive LEDs Designers use ballast ICs, such as International Rectifier’s IR53HD420, in CFLs (compact fluorescent lamps) for heating the filaments, igniting the lamps, and supplying the lamps with current. This Design Idea by Christian Rausch shows how you can use a CFL-ballast IC for driving LEDs instead of CFLs. Click here

Portable Connectivity Driving Wi-Fi Chipset Market Portable connectivity applications are driving the global Wi-Fi chipset market, with shipments growing on account of big growth from the mobile PC segment, the Portable Consumer Electronics segment, and the dual-mode handset segment, reports In-Stat. Although dual-mode cellular/Wi-Fi handsets represented only 3% of total shipments in 2006, this category will be the breakout market segment in 2007, and will reach 20% of the total chipset market in 2009. Two-Factor Authentication Software Development Kit The AuthEngine tool from Cryptocard is designed to help developers embed two-factor authentication into their application without adding costs for additional servers, databases or directories. AuthEngine works within a company's existing database, workflow and technology infrastructure. It provides the functionality for initialising authentication tokens and validating authentication requests. Cryptocard gives away two complete AuthEngine packages worth 500 Euros each, including five KT-1 tokens and a token initialiser to set all the token's parameters. Click here

The Nearly Men: A Chronicle of Scientific Failure, by Mike Green This book which is produced by reputable historical publishing house Tempus, examines some of the most important inventions and scientific of the last four hundred years, and attempts to uncover the stories of deceit and treachery behind each of them. It looks beyond what the common reference sources tend to tell us, and aims to identify the individuals who were truly responsible for such important technological advances as the microchip, the computer, the light bulb, the telephone, radio communication, the laws of planetary motion and even the theory of evolution.
