Beware the Low-Cost FPGA
So, thanks to the increasing availability of standard components using key protocols such as PCI Express, Serial Rapid IO and Gigabit Ethernet, the predicted integration of high-speed serial interfaces in mainstream applications is finally happening. In order to address this space, a new breed of low cost FPGAs with embedded transceivers are needed to provide the bridging and interfacing solutions between processor and DSP or to connect existing customer solutions to the new technology. Bob Blake from Altera describes this new FPGAS in detail in his article in EPN.

Implement a stepper-motor driver in a CPLD
Due to Freescales heavily used but obsolete SAA1042 stepper-motor-driver IC, this Design Idea by describes a CPLD-based implementation of a stepper-motor driver that can replace the driver in SAA1027- or UCN5804B-based designs.

Use a CFL ballast to drive LEDs
Designers use ballast ICs, such as International Rectifier’s IR53HD420, in CFLs (compact fluorescent lamps) for heating the filaments, igniting the lamps, and supplying the lamps with current. This Design Idea by shows how you can use a CFL-ballast IC for driving LEDs instead of CFLs.

Portable Connectivity Driving Wi-Fi Chipset Market
Portable connectivity applications are driving the global Wi-Fi chipset market, with shipments growing on account of big growth from the mobile PC segment, the Portable Consumer Electronics segment, and the dual-mode handset segment, reports In-Stat. Although dual-mode cellular/Wi-Fi handsets represented only 3% of total shipments in 2006, this category will be the breakout market segment in 2007, and will reach 20% of the total chipset market in 2009.

Two-Factor Authentication Software Development Kit
The AuthEngine tool from Cryptocard is designed to help developers embed two-factor authentication into their application without adding costs for additional servers, databases or directories. AuthEngine works within a company's existing database, workflow and technology infrastructure. It provides the functionality for initialising authentication tokens and validating authentication requests. Cryptocard gives away two complete AuthEngine packages worth 500 Euros each, including five KT-1 tokens and a token initialiser to set all the token's parameters.

The Nearly Men: A Chronicle of Scientific Failure, by Mike Green
This book which is produced by reputable historical publishing house Tempus, examines some of the most important inventions and scientific of the last four hundred years, and attempts to uncover the stories of deceit and treachery behind each of them. It looks beyond what the common reference sources tend to tell us, and aims to identify the individuals who were truly responsible for such important technological advances as the microchip, the computer, the light bulb, the telephone, radio communication, the laws of planetary motion and even the theory of evolution.
