AMD Quad Core ATX Board (Kontron)
Based around the latest AMD RS780 and SB700 chipsets that can be used with the high-performance AMD AM2/AM2+ Athlon 64 and Phenom single, dual, triple and quad core processors, the KT780/ATX basic motherboard offers scalable performance up to 4x 2.6GHz to meet individual application requirements. Performance is boosted even further by two dual-channel RAM banks for up to 32Gbytes of DDR2-400/533/667/800 with ECC support for increased data security.

FPGA-based I/O Cards (Mesa Elektronik)
The Mesa 7I43 is a low-cost, general-purpose programmable I/O card thatconnects to the host computer via a USB or PC parallel port. The board uses a 400,000 gate Xilinx Spartan-3 FPGA for all logic tasks. Efficient switching regulators are used for the FPGA core and 3.3V power, allowing the 7I43 to be USB bus-powered.

High-End Computer Board (Moxa)
The ThinkCore V481 board, based on the Intel x86 processor, is a ready-to-run embedded computer with VGA, dual LANs, eight serial ports, CompactFlash, USB, and audio. The VGA interface was included to make this computer particularly well-suited for industrial applications, such as SCADA and factory automation.

ARM-Processor Starter Kit (Toshiba Electronics)
The BMSKTOPASA910 plug & play starter kit brings together all of the hardware and software needed to develop and test applications based on the TMPA910CRAXBG processor. The kit's hardware-development PCB measures just 110x150mm. In addition to the processor, onboard functionality includes a 3.5" display with a touch screen, Ethernet connectivity, a 480Mbps USB 2.0 interface and an RS-232 connector.

DSPs Take Center Stage in IP Phones
An SoC with a DSP core has the necessary processing power to meet the demands of mid- to high-end phones. While other solutions exist today for IP-phone developers, such as single or dual RISC-based architectures, they are simply not as efficient when it comes to voice codecs and real-time voice processing. An optimised solution is introduced by Angela Raucher from Texas Instruments in her article.

Thermal Design in Motor-Control Systems
With electric motors playing a fundamental role in an increasing range of applications, there is a growing need for adequate thermal management in motor-control designs. Electronic motor controls are proving attractive in all sorts of equipment, from domestic appliances to industrial machines and from automotive subsystems to electric vehicles. How to find the right thermal management for these applications explains Nico Bruijnis from Bergquist in his article.

Current source makes novel Class A buffer
The basis for this Design Idea by Horst Koelzow is a classic two-transistor current source. Typically, this circuit finds use as a steady current source or as a limiter. The circuit forms the amplifier for the upper, positive half of the signal. Adding a complementary stage for the lower, negative half of the signal completes the buffer.

Red LEDs function as light sensors
Ordinary red LEDs normally function as light emitters, but they can also function as photosensors. A single LED can even function as both a light emitter and a light detector in the same circuit. The basic idea in this Design Idea by Geoff Nicholls, Glinde, Germany, is to pulse the LED, using the on-time to light it and the off-time to sense the photovoltaic current from the ambient light that the LED sees.

Impact of Devices on a Mobile Broadband Universe
This market report by Instat shows, that devices can make or break mobile broadband and related services. Operators price their services and build applications based on available devices. Devices attract users to new services. Having the right device can make a service a success, such as the iPhone, while the wrong device can kill a service, such as those available to the now defunct Cellular Digital Packet Data.

Designing Embedded Systems with PIC Microcontrollers, by Tim Wilmshurst
This book is a hands-on introduction to the principles and practice of embedded system design using the PIC microcontroller. Packed with helpful examples and illustrations, it gives an in-depth treatment of microcontroller design, programming in both assembly language and C, and features advanced topics such as networking and real-time operating systems. It is accompanied by a CD-ROM containing copies of all programs and software tools used in the text and a ‘student’ version of the C complier.
