Front-end Power Supplies
Emerson Network Power has launched two high-efficiency bulk front-end power supplies for systems that use distributed power architectures. Rated at 1200W and 2000W, respectively, the DS1200-3 and DS2000-3 power supplies generate a main payload output of 12Vdc and an auxiliary output of 3.3Vdc for powering standby circuitry. An alternative auxiliary output of 5Vdc is available.

High-speed LDO voltage regulators

Torex has unveiled the XC6501 series of high-speed LDO voltage regulators. Featuring internal phase compensation, these devices ensure a stable output within a 1.2V to 5V range, without requiring a CL capacitor. The regulator is therefore a suitable choice for providing voltage regulation in space-constrained designs such as mobile phones, portable gaming devices and cameras.

DOSA-compliant 1/16 brick DC-DC converter
Power-One has introduced the SSQE48T25033 DC-DC converter. This DOSA-compliant 1/16 brick provides 3.3VDC at 25A with full-rated power available at 55°C and 22A at 70°C, using 200LFM airflow. Tight regulation and high efficiency make this converter suitable for DPA or IBA power source for communications, data server/storage and workstation applications.

Proximity Sensor Algorithms

Once the electrical and mechanical design considerations of a proximity sensor are determined, you must test your sensor in your product scenario. If the design requires the proximity sensor to identify an approaching object, then testing will reveal the proximity output counts with respect to distance. The shape of the output depends on the composition and reflectivity of the object. The proximity response then allows the designer to select an appropriate
detection scheme.

Digital Techniques for Power Modules
The mantra of today's energy-conscious designer demands that power supplies squeeze every possible fraction of a Watt from systems that must also be cost-effective, easy to apply and occupy minimal space. Just as battery-powered mobile electronics presents challenges that multiple semiconductor vendors strive to meet, industrial and telecom systems that use intermediate bus architectures require specialist design skills to maximise the value of the comparatively large amounts of power that they manage.

POE devices address higher-powered applications
Manufacturers of PDs (powered devices) that rely on the IEEE 802.3af POE (powerover- Ethernet) standard rather than ac wall power can shrink board space and the BOM (bill-of-materials) costs. They achieve this reduction by using a PD-interface-control IC to handle PWM (pulsewidth- modulation) control for the PD’s external-power-supply magnetics and switching devices, as well as networkinterface chores.

Stepper Motor Reference Design
Stepper motors are often controlled using special function ICs that provide limited control and system performance. This reference design demonstrates a high performance stepper motor system and provides a complete schematic, BOM, printed circuit board artwork, code flowcharts, and source code.

Add charging status to simple lithium-ion charger
Like other simple, single-cell lithium-ion battery chargers, Microchip’s MCP 73812 provides no means of indicating the charging status. You can remedy this situation by adding four components. Add one more LED, and you also get a chargingcomplete indication. This two-LED configuration has the added benefit that one of the LEDs is always on, providing an indication that the charger is powered.

Digital power comes of age
After years of research, digital power-conversion techniques are making their way out of the laboratory and into everyday products. According to a recent report from Darnell Group, the portion of the power-supply market that will employ some form of digital-loop control will grow at an average annual rate of 45% for at least the next five years. Over the same period, Darnell estimates, the worldwide ac/dc and dc/dc power-supply market will grow by 10% annually, meaning that the digital- power segment will enjoy five times faster growth that the overall market.
