DC/DC Converter (Linear Technology)
Linear Technology has announced the release of the LT3580, a current-mode, fixed-frequency step-up DC/DC converter with an internal 2A, 42V switch. It operates from an input-voltage range of 2.5V to 32V, which makes it suitable for applications with input sources ranging from a single-cell Li-Ion battery to automotive inputs.

24V DC/DC Converter (SynQor)
The PQ60240QGA05 isolated 1/4-brick DC/DC converter packs up to 120W (5A) of output power into the 36.8x58.4mm DOSA standard package and is just 10.9mm high in an open-frame format. Operating at an efficiency of 92%, the converter has minimal de-rating even in applications where there is limited cooling available.

Bench Power Supplies (TTI)
The PL series from Thurlby Thandar is a range of 90W laboratory DC power-supply units that offers the benefits of digital technology whilst retaining true analogue controls for voltage and current. The product range incorporates the benefits of digital control, which are instantly available via the S-lock and V-span functions; the former enables the voltage and current settings to be locked at the press of a button.

2.5-A Buck Regulator (National Semiconductor)
The LM5005 high-frequency buck regulator steps down an input voltage from 7 to 75V to produce a regulated 2.5-A power supply, adjustable from 1.225 to 65V. Reliable and compact, the device is optimised for 48-V telecom, automotive and industrial power supply applications.

Distributed linear regulators increase output current and spread the heat
Parallel-board layout and heat spreading offer designers new ways of using linear regulators in all-surface-mount approaches. The article by Robert Dobkin from Linear Technology shows that these techniques work well in today´s high-performance, high-density PCBs.

Exploring memory architectures: Pillars of processing performance
This article by Robert Cravotta, Technical Editor, EDN, explains that processor-based systems rely on multiple, heterogeneous memory subsystems to deliver better system performance, cost efficiencies and less power.

Circuits protect outputs against overvoltage
In test-and-measurement applications, you must provide over-voltage protection for the output terminals of amplifiers, power supplies, and similar components. The conventional way to accomplish this task is to add series resistors with the output node along with the clamping diodes to power-supply rails or other threshold voltages. This Design Idea by Dimitri Danyuk, Kiev, Ukraine, shows an alternative approach.

Integrator ramps up/down, holds output level
Op-amp integrators can ramp to saturation, and a capacitor- discharge switch can reset them. Alternatively, you can input-switch them to ramp up and down in triangle- waveform-generator applications. Much searching through online “cookbook” circuits turned up no means of ramping an op-amp integrator to hold at a preset constant voltage level. This Design Idea by Glen Chenier, TeeterTotterTreeStuff describes a single-supply op-amp circuit that outputs a rising or falling linear-voltage ramp in response to a step change of a positive dc-input voltage of 0V to VCC.

Digital Radio Market Growth Advances Worldwide
In 2006, the worldwide market for digital radio receivers reached nine million unit shipments, representing a 61% growth rate over 2005. Satellite radio continues to be the pervasive form of digital radio in the US, with satellite radio receiver shipments expected to outpace terrestrial HD Radio receiver shipments again in 2007. In other markets, most notably in the UK, terrestrial Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) is driving digital radio shipments. In-Stat’s latest primary research data shows that 57% of respondents were aware of HD Radio in 2005. In 2007, this percentage jumped significantly to 77% of respondents.

Troubleshooting Switching Power Converters, by Sanjaya Maniktala
This book presents practical knowledge the author acquired rather painfully, while working "in the trenches" for several years in major engineering companies scattered across several continents. This is intended to be the mythical senior engineer's "bag of tricks," finally made available in the form of an easy-to-read book on your shelf. This book will make life for the ambitious power supply engineer much simpler - besides reducing significantly, the rigorous requirement of having to be a senior engineer's protégé for years on end, just to gain a small measure of real success in this field.
