Dear Sir/Madam

Electrical power is necessary especially in the automation industry – one of the big electronic markets in Europe. This is shown at the SPS/IPC Drives exhibition in Nuremberg were the automation industry meets every year to discus future trends and present actual products. This newsletter features some of them. Enjoy!

Power-Management MOSFETs (NEC Electronics)
The TO-263-7 PowerMOSFET is part of the NP series of low-voltage power-management devices. It features advanced packaging solutions to reduce leakage current and manage heat dissipation more efficiently. The devices offer on-state resistances Rds(on) of 1.5 mOhm maximum for a VDSS of 40V and a VGS of 10V, and are well-suited for applications such as automotive, low-voltage DC motor control and uninterruptible power supplies.

N-Channel MOSFET (Fairchild)
The FDS881XNZ series of high-efficiency N-channel MOSFETs supports up to 8kV ESD (HBM) voltage protection, a figure 90% higher than that of existing devices on the market, claims manufacturer Fairchild Semiconductor.

Full-Brick DC/DC Converter (Ericsson Power Modules)
The PKY4716PI DC/DC converter platform delivers 700W of output power and typically exceeds 94% of efficiency in the industry-standard full-brick format and footprint. Aimed at the telecoms market, the device exhibits an efficiency curve that is virtually flat from 30 to 100% load. It handles both 48 and 60V system voltages and has an input-voltage range of 36 to 75V (though it can withstand up to 100V input continuously).

1.2A LED Driver (Texas Instruments)
The TPS61050 LED-driver IC is based on a high-frequency synchronous-boost topology with a constant-current sink to drive single, high-brightness white-light emitters. The tiny 2x1.5x0.625mm device uses an inductive fixed-frequency pulse-width-modulation-control-scheme utilising small external components, and minimising input-ripple current for applications, such as a white LED flash for camera phones, smart phones and PDAs, or other general lighting systems.

SnakeBytes and Venom in High Performance Analogue
This article by Alan Hutton from National Semiconductor looks at the key features of the reference platform SnakeBytes and focuses on how the high performance analogue content from National can aid system designers with their board level partitioning across the digital and analogue divides.

Helping With Water Provision
This article by John Crockett from Digi International  details the implementation of a wireless network based on low-power stand-alone radio modems to remotely monitor water levels in the mountainous region of Monterrey and ensure efficient water treatment and supply.

Single op amp achieves doublehysteresis-transfer characteristic
In process-control applications requiring discontinuous controllers, the most elementary choice is a two-position-mode or on/off controller. This Design Idea by Herminio Martínez, Encarna García, and Juan Gámiz from the Technical University of Catalonia in Barcelona, Spain, shows one simple way to implement a three-position controller with just one op-amp.

Inverting sample-and-hold amplifier requires no external resistors
Many applications require a sampling circuit whose output is inverted with regard to the respective sample of an input signal. A simple approach is a cascade of a common non-inverting sample-and-hold amplifier and an inverting amplifier. The inverting sample-and-hold circuit in the Design Idea by Marián Štofka from the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava, Slovakia, uses the Analog Devices’ AD8592 dual op amps, which have a high-quality shutdown function and uses no external resistors.

Europe Leading the Way in Digital Terrestrial TV
Europe is leading the world in the fast-growing digital terrestrial platform (DTT), though other regions are gaining momentum, reports In-Stat. With analogue shutoffs (ASOs) approaching in North America and Western Europe, strong drivers for digital terrestrial set top boxes are on the horizon as consumers transition from analogue to digital. While other regions are further behind the digital curve, actions are being taken to expand digital services; whether it is formally adopting a standard (e.g. Honduras and ATSC) or anticipating DTT launches (e.g. Brazil), digital is becoming a global change.

Electromagnetic Compatibility in Power Systems, by Francesco Lattarulo (Editor)
In addition to textbooks providing a thorough background on basic EMC aspects, thus being well-tailored for students and those which want to get in contact with this discipline. The most can be made to jointly sustain a helpful and practicable publishing activity is to supply specialised monographs or miscellanies of selected topics. This is the object of the present book which tries to rather discuss special subjects, or throw out suggestions for reformulating conventional approaches, than to appear as a reference text.
