Dear Sir/Madam

The period of wired communication is definitely gone and is replaced by the „golden age“ of wireless communications. Nowadays you are able to make phone calls and get access to the Internet wherever you are – via wireless connection. This newsletter shows you what´s going on in the wireless communication market. Enjoy!

3G LTE Development Platform (Freescale Semiconductor)
Freescale Semiconductor unveiled a development platform designed to speed and simplify the creation of networking equipment for 3G LTE (Long Term Evolution) and other emerging broadband wireless technologies. The platform is engineered to provide the multi-gigahertz performance, low-power operation, and interconnect technologies crucial to support the high-data-rate air interface and IP-packet-handling requirements of LTE base stations.

Antenna for WiMAX (Andrew)
The Andrew WiMAX 2.5GHz antenna features the company's patented Teletilt variable electrical downtilt design that enables the antenna to be adjusted remotely for temporary changes in network-usage patterns. With Teletilt, the antenna's electrical downtilt can be changed at any time to optimise network coverage and minimise site-to-site interference within the network.

Networked RFID Transponders in Automated Production
After being filled and transported to the distributor and then to the point of use, how does a beer keg safely find its way back to the right place in the warehouse? Jörg Hehlgans and DEtlef Hagen from Harting Mitronics show in their article how a small transponder can makes it happen by supplying the information necessary to overcome all the logistic hurdles.

CPLD autonomously awakens battery-powered system
A common industrial and consumer application is a system that samples an environmental condition, for example GPS (globalpositioning- system) location, voltage, temperature, or light, at a wide interval, such as once every minute. This type of system is becoming increasingly wireless and battery-powered; it wakes up every minute, takes a sample, transmits data to a central data-collection terminal, and then goes back to sleep. This Design Idea by Rafael Camarota from Altera uses a small portion of an CPLD with a few discrete capacitors, resistors, diodes, and MOSFETs to autonomously wake a CPLD-based system from a full power-down state to an “on” state using an RC-timer circuit.

Magnetic-field probe requires few components
Popularly known as “gauss meters,” various makes and models of magnetic field meters are available on the market at prices that make them unaffordable to most people. This Design Idea by Rama Sarma, EMI-EMC Centre, RCI in Hyderabad, India, combines a commonly available DMM (digital multimeter) with a single semiconductor component to measure magnetic-flux density and, in turn, magnetic-field intensity.

MIMO Wireless Communications, by Claude Oestges and Bruno Clerckx
Uniquely, this book proposes robust space-time code designs for real-world wireless channels. Through a unified framework, it emphasizes how propagation mechanisms such as space-time frequency correlations and coherent components impact the MIMO system performance under realistic power constraints. Combining a solid mathematical analysis with a physical and intuitive approach to space-time coding, the book progressively derives innovative designs, taking into consideration that MIMO channels are often far from ideal.
