Dear Sir/Madam
Even in digital circuits the designer has to consider analogue
effects like circulating currents or RF problems if the circuits
are working in the GHz range. In this newsletter youŽll find
some products, articles and design tips to create proper
analogue Devices. Enjoy!

Linear Position Sensor/Encoder (IC Haus)
The iC-ML is an integrated magnetic linear position
sensor/encoder assembled in a space-saving TSSOP20 package
measuring only 6.6x6.4x1.1mm. The circuit contains four Hall
sensors for the generation of analogue sine/cosine signals at a
pole pitch of 2.56mm; it also has an integrated
signal-conditioning unit with an ADC and output interfaces.

Data
And Power Isolation (Analog Devices)
Part of the iCoupler family, the ADuM524x devices are
the industry's first to provide both data and power isolation in a
single package. Unlike existing solutions that require the
configuration of separate signal and power circuitry involving
multiple components, these devices integrate a DC/DC converter
providing up to 50mW of isolated, regulated power at 5V, with
independent signal channels.

RS485
Transceivers (Linear Technology)
The LTC2856, LTC2857 and LTC2858 are low power
RS485/422 transceivers, operating on 5V supplies. Each IC is
available in two versions, one that operates at maximum data rates
of 20Mbytes/s, while another delivers 250kbit/s slew rate limited
driver outputs to control high frequency emission from equipment and
data cables. Enhanced ESD protection on the transceiver interface
pins allows the ICs to withstand ±15kV for ESD strikes without
latchup or damage.

LVDS
Dual Multiplexer Buffers (National Semiconductor)
The DS15MB200, SCAN15MB200 and DS08MB200 aim to
extend the reach of LVDS signals across cables and backplanes in
point-to-point applications. The dual multiplexer-buffer
configuration manages redundant differential data streams at speeds
up to 1.5Gbps.

Intelligent Power-Management Trends and Methods
Over the past years, great steps ahead have been made in process
technology to enhance the performance of power converters; novel
topologies and innovative IC control logics that have renovated
the standard power-supply architectures. Nevertheless, all of
these technology improvements are useless without a careful and
scrupulous analysis by the designer before putting these novel
advances into practical use.
Michele Sclocchi explains in his article the
different methods a designer can use for analysing novel
topologies.

Circulating currents: The warnings are out
Technical Editor
Paul Rako gives in his cover story in
EDN an understanding how to avoid or minimize the effects of
circulating currents and make your designs more robust. Every
engineer should know the techniques for neutralizing this insidious
phenomenon.

Gain-of-three amplifier requires no external resistors
Analog Devices' ADA4862-3 comprises three wideband amplifiers,
each configured by an internal, fixed-value resistive-feedback
network as a noninverting gain-of-two amplifier. M.
Stofk from the
Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava shows in his
Design Idea how this
IC provides wideband amplification and minimizes parts count.

High-impedance buffer amplifier's input includes ESD protection
Certain measurement applications, such as for pH
(acidity) and bio-potentials, require a high-impedance buffer
amplifier. Although several semiconductor manufacturers offer
amplifier ICs featuring low bias and offset-input currents,
attaching a sensor cable to an amplifier circuit can inflict damage
from ESD (electrostatic discharge). Eugene
Palatnik describes in his Design Idea that diodes and guard
traces can suppress high-voltage static-discharge transients.

Introduction to Linear Circuit Analysis and Modelling, by Luis
Moura and Izzat Darwazeh,
The authors introduce linear circuit modelling and analysis
applied to both electrical and electronic circuits, starting
with DC and progressing up to RF, considering noise analysis
along the way. The book is also supported by a companion
website, featuring a full solutions manual, additional
equations, graphs and illustrations for Lecturers to download
when preparing teaching aids, as well as numerous case studies,
worked examples and exercises using Matlab to aid student
learning.
