Dear Sir/Madam
The electronica 2006 showed last week once more the importance of the automotive industry for the German electronics market. Therefore we collected some information about this topic in this newsletter. Enjoy it!

High-Temperature Tantalum Capacitors (Kemet) The new high-temperature T499 tantalum chip series is designed for use in applications with operating temperatures up to +175°C. According to the supplier, this product offers the highest operating-temperature capability that's available for any surface-mount tantalum device on the market. Click here
Class D Amplifiers For Car Audio (Texas Instruments) Specifically designed for the automotive market, the TAS5414 is a single-ended input amplifier, whereas the TAS5424 has differential input, enabling it to achieve higher dynamic-range performance in a challenging board signal-routing environment. The new amplifiers deliver 90% power efficiency at normal radio listening levels for automotive audio systems. Click here
LED-Matrix Lighting Modules (Universal Sciences) The LED array modules normally comprise a matrix of customer-specified surface-mount LEDs soldered to an etched copper layer, separated from an aluminium or copper heat-dissipating base by a thermally efficient, electrically isolating dielectric material. LED-matrix-based designs are increasingly being used in applications such as automotive lighting clusters. Click here
Advanced Energy Storage in Automobiles The development of electric and hybrid vehicles (EV/HEVs) is a response to the growing environmental pressure for cleaner and more efficient vehicles. Adrian Schneuwly and Jürgen Auer from Maxwell explain in their article in EPN that the success depends on the development of advanced energy-storage technologies, including batteries and ultracapacitors. Embedded LCD Controller Anton Brauchle from Epson describes in his article in EPN in detail the S1D13513, the first product in a new graphics-controller family. The graphical performance is suited for embedded applications that require low or medium graphics performance at a very reasonable price. Click here
Feedback circuit enhances phototransistor's linear operation Unlike photodiodes and photovoltaic cells that have only two leads, a phototransistor's base connection allows a feedback circuit to control the device's bias point. JC Ferrer and A Garrigós from the University Miguel Hernandez in Elche, Spain, show in their Design Idea in EDN how bias-current compensation reduces ambient-light saturation effects. Click here
LED senses and displays ambient-light intensity In addition to their customary roles as indicators and illuminators, modern LEDs can also serve as photovoltaic detectors. Dhananjay V Gadre and Sheetal Vashist from the ECE Division, Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology, New Delhi, India, show in their Design Idea in EDN a method of using a LED as a photovoltaic detector. Micro Mechanical Systems, Principles and Technology, by T. Fukuda and Wolfgang Menz In ten sections this book describes the principles and technology of Micro Mechanical Systems. Section one is a general introduction to the historical background and the parallels to microelectronics, reviewing the motivation for microsystems, and discussing microphysics and design and the evolution from microcomponents to microsystems. The final section discusses the future problems and outlook of micro mechanical systems. Click here
