Development Kits (Altera)
Altera and Elektrobit have announced the availability of the industry's first development kits for designing applications in compliance with the open base station architecture initiative (OBSAI) reference point 3-01 (RP3-01) specification for remote RF heads. The kits include a Stratix II GX FPGA development board and Nios II embedded processor core from Altera, and Elektrobit's advanced RP3-01 IP cores, as well as all the necessary design software for emulating system configuration and control behaviour.

M2M GPRS Module (Telit)
Designed to be used in wireless communication for machine to machine (M2M), the GE-864 quadband GSM/GPRS module has a compact form factor. The BGA assembly concept ensures installation that is not only straightforward and reliable but also costeffective as with SMD components in the pick & place process.

UWB Standards in the Balance?
Ultrawideband (UWB) technologies have the potential of offering an unprecedented range of user benefits. With its broad bandwidth, the introduction of an agreed standard unleashes the prospect of an unparalleled wireless-market penetration, with interoperability between different product types dissolving many vertical market boundaries. Wayne Gilbert from TES gives a detailed insight of these technologies in his article in EPN.

The World of WiMAX
WiMAX has gained a lot of media attention in recent times. There are two main variants: 802.16-2004 was meant for Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) applications only, while the newer 802.16e - or Mobile WiMAX - is targeted at fully mobile wireless applications (and includes fixed). Rupert Bainesfrom Picochip explains both variants and their advantages in his article in EPN.

“Brick-wall” lowpass audio filter needs no tuning
When a system’s specifications call for a lowpass filter with a steep frequency-cutoff characteristic, an engineer can opt for a “brick-wall”- filter design that features a sharp transition band. example in an FM stereophonic-broadcast system in their Design Idea in EDN.

Phase-sequence indicator uses few passive components
In a three-phase ac system, a power source with three wires delivers ac potentials of equal frequency and amplitudes with respect to a zero-potential wire, each shifted in phase by 120° from one wire to the next. Two possibilities exist for establishing a phase sequence. In the first, voltage on the second wire shifts by 120° relative to the first, and, in the second, a –120° shift occurs with respect to the first wire. The Design Idea by Metodi Iliev from the University of California in Berkeley shows a conceptual circuit that can detect both phase sequences.

Mobile Networks to Take Lead in Next-Generation IMS Networks
Mobile networks will take the lead in establishing IP multimedia subsystem (IMS)-based next-generation networks (NGNs) and introducing next-generation applications, reports In-Stat. Wireline operators will continue to operate NGN overlays over the next five years, focused on revenue-generating independent point-solutions, the high-tech market research firm says.

3G Evolution, by Eric Dahlman et al
In the rapidly evolving world of third generation mobile systems, there is a constant demand for new features, increased bandwidth and standardized solutions. The Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) is working to satisfy these demands and generate globally applicable technical solutions which can be implemented by equipment manufacturers and deployed within mobile wireless networks. The technologies recently agreed by 3GPP mark the next step in 3G’s development – Super 3G mobile broadband. This practical book, written by engineers working closely in 3GPP, gives insight into the new technologies adopted by 3GPP, demonstrating how they can be integrated together to develop Super 3G mobile broadband access.
