Dear Sir/Madam

To design complex electronic devices right it is necessary to validate, verify, and measure the design at every stage. More and more software is used to do this job but you still need test &measurement hardware to evaluate whether the final product is working properly. This newsletter contains some examples for you. Enjoy!

Mixed-Signal Oscilloscopes
With analogue bandwidths from 200MHz up to 2GHz, a maximum digital input frequency of 500MHz, and a long memory of 50Mpoints/channel, the MS-500 mixed signal oscilloscope delivers raw performance for serial-data buses. The mixed-signal oscilloscope provides up to 36 digital channels. All analogue and digital channels can capture data at full sample rate for up to 25ms, simultaneously on all channels.

Exploring LXI's Advanced Capabilities
Paul Franklin and Andrew Creque from Keithley Instruments show in their article in EPN that the LXI (LAN Extensions for Instrumentation) specification help engineers overcoming the limitations of common test-system architectures in several ways. LXI systems employ Ethernet LAN for device interconnection so they don't limit the number of interconnected devices, allowing easier, less expensive connections. Ethernet networks easily support physically distributed systems, large data sets, and high data rates.

Model Behaviour: Creating Embedded Software Short Cuts
As embedded-system teams race to bring new products to market, designers are evaluating model-based development tools to deal with escalating software complexity. Warren Webb explains in his article in

Cheap and easy Inductance tester uses few components
In the absence of expensive test equipment, the circuit in the Design Idea by in EDN offers a simple and rapid alternative method of measuring inductance. Its applications include verifying that an inductor’s value falls close to its design parameters and characterizing magnetic cores of unknown parameters that accumulate in most engineers’ collection of miscellaneous components. As designed, the circuit tests most inductors for use in power supplies and many inductors for RF circuits.

Oscilloscope helps obtain Bode plots in non-50Ω environments
A Bode plot can simplify characterization of an active or a passive network by showing frequency and phase representations of the network’s transfer function, T. an alternative to building or purchasing custom buffer amplifiers, by using the near-ideal amplifiers in an analogue oscilloscope that provides a vertical amplifier output on its rear panels—for example, the venerable Tektronix 465B.

4| Book of The Month

ESL Design and Verification, by Grant Martin et alElectronic System Level (ESL) design has mainstreamed – it is now an established approach at most of the world’s leading system-on-chip design companies and is being used increasingly in system design. This book offers a true prescriptive guide to ESL that reviews its past and outlines the best practices of today.
